"The rich and wealthy are not being discriminated against. In fact they have been given a leg up by the Singapore Government through a personal income tax reduction from 22% to 20%. see http://www.asiabizsetup.com/singapor...-taxes-qa.aspx For anyone earning more than $320,000 annually, a reduction of 2% tax roughly translates into savings of (2% of $160,000= $3,200) , assuming 50% taxable income. And for someone earning $2,000,000 (e.g. an Accountant, Banker, Minister, etc.) the tax savings will be (2% of $1,000,000 = $20,000), again roughly assuming 50% taxable income. That's probably what a low income family earns annually.
But by upping the GST from 5% to 7%, effectively the poor carries a heavier GST tax burden (directly or indirectly) than the rich. Afterall, what is 2% increase in GST for the rich after saving 2% income tax payable. In other words, the poor has been 'robbed' through GST to finance the lowering of personal income tax rate for the rich." |
